Mammito: from Laini Saba to Africa’s most-followed female comedian.
Kibera Creatives is a KNN series on the artists, designers and performers who built their names from Kibera. Profiles are compiled from published reports and the subjects' own public pages; sources are listed at the end. Spotted an error? Write to news@kibranewsnetwork.co.ke.
Eunice Wanjiru Njoki, known everywhere as Mammito, is a stand-up comedian, actress, MC and content creator. She grew up in Laini Saba, went to Laini Saba Primary and Silanga Mixed Secondary, and took a diploma in community development at Mount Kenya University. Her early stage time came through Kibera Creative Arts in Mashimoni, where she says she now mentors girls.
Churchill Show
She joined Churchill Show in 2015 after several failed auditions, and her first open mic went badly from stage fright. "The judges were so impressed that they gave me a standing ovation," she told The Standard about the audition that finally worked. By December 2020 The Standard was calling her Africa's most-followed female comedian on Instagram, with more than a million followers; by 2023 the Nation put the figure at 1.9 million on Instagram and 1.1 million on Facebook.
Abroad
She appeared in the Kenya episode of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown (2018), and has performed at the Kigali International Comedy Festival (2017), Seka Festival in Kigali (2018), Queens of Comedy in Botswana (2019) and African Night of Laughter in Doha (2023).
Her own shows
Rather than wait for bookings, she has been staging and funding her own shows. Mammito & Friends at Braeburn Theatre in December 2022 sold out its 350 seats; she said she had put more than Sh1 million into it. Mammito & Girlfriends at the Nairobi National Museum in September 2023 sold out at Sh2,000 a ticket, and a third edition on 9 December 2023 brought in Akau Jambo and Vafa Naraghi. Maandamano Baby followed at CU Shah Jain Bhavan in Loresho on 20 December 2024. "This is me coming of age," she told the Nation in 2023.
