KETRACO energises Sh8.4 billion Isinya–Konza power line to serve smart city.
Kenya has switched on a major new power link, with KETRACO energising the Sh8.4 billion Isinya – Konza transmission project. The scheme comprises a 400kV transmission line and a high-capacity substation designed to feed Konza Technopolis – the country's flagship "smart city" – and to shore up supply across the lower eastern region.
Jointly financed by the Export-Import Bank of China and the Government of Kenya, the project strengthens grid reliability for Kajiado, Machakos and Makueni counties as well as the growing technology hub. KETRACO's acting managing director Kipkemoi Kibias said the line would improve the stability and quality of power in the area.
For Konza, long billed as Kenya's answer to a purpose-built tech city, dependable electricity is foundational infrastructure – the difference between a marketing vision and a functioning digital economy. The energisation is a concrete step toward that ambition, and a reminder that the country's high-tech aspirations still rest on unglamorous but essential work like pylons, substations and transmission lines.
