Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi has rejected claims by Democracy for Citizens Party leader Rigathi Gachagua that President William Ruto ordered an increase in fuel prices to raise money for next year’s election campaigns.

Speaking on Tuesday ahead of the monthly fuel price review, Gachagua said petrol would go up by Sh12 a litre and diesel by Sh9. He alleged that the extra revenue would be used for political mobilisation ahead of the 2027 General Election and that the Energy CS had been told to blame rising global oil prices.

Wandayi, who was accompanying the President on a tour of West Pokot, said Gachagua knew nothing about how fuel prices are set. He said prices are determined by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) through a regulatory process and that no politician has the power to change them. He pointed to instability in the Middle East, which has pushed up crude prices and shipping costs.

The exchange turned personal, with Wandayi accusing Gachagua of seeking payments from petroleum companies when he was Deputy President. Gachagua has not responded to that accusation, and neither side has produced evidence for its claims.

What EPRA announced

Later on Wednesday, EPRA raised the price of super petrol by Sh12.93 a litre, diesel by Sh9.90 and kerosene by Sh28.49 for the period to 14 November. The regulator attributed the rise to higher import costs in September.

EPRA sets maximum pump prices every month on the 14th, using a formula based on the landed cost of imported fuel, taxes, levies and distribution margins.
