A short clip showing Raila Odinga Jnr at a meeting where an apparent oath is being administered has set off an argument online about how his expected run for the Kibra parliamentary seat is being organised.
The undated video, which began circulating over the weekend, shows Raila Jnr seated in a boardroom with several other people. At the front of the room one person holds a Bible while another leads what appears to be an oath, asking a participant to pledge loyalty to his anticipated Kibra campaign and to resist betrayal, Capital FM reports.
Where and when the meeting took place, what the ceremony was for, and whether it is connected to his political activities could not be independently established.
Raila Jnr appeared to brush off the criticism on Monday afternoon, telling a critic who tagged him in the clip that he did not know who had sent bloggers after him. He posted screenshots of the online reaction but did not explain the meeting itself.
The video landed in the middle of a busy run of appearances in Kibra. Earlier the same day he said he had met elders from the constituency’s five wards – Laini Saba, Lindi, Makina, Woodley/Kenyatta Golf Course and Sarang’ombe – for talks he described as being about unity, community development and the future of Kibra. Days earlier he met a group he called the Kibra Friends of Raila.
He has not formally declared a candidacy, but the pace of his grassroots meetings has fuelled talk of a 2027 bid. His public profile has grown since the death of his father, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, in October 2025. In June he took part in a design review for the proposed Raila Odinga Mausoleum, and in July he represented the family at the handover of the Kang’o ka Jaramogi site in Siaya to the Kenya Defence Forces for construction.
Reaction to the clip has been split, with supporters calling the criticism politically driven. Neither Raila Jnr nor his allies have said anything further about the event in the video.
