Nairobi County has listed Kibra among 246 high-risk areas facing flooding once the October-December rains begin, county officials said this week.

County disaster teams mapped the hotspots ahead of forecast El Nino rains, projecting that between 22,000 and 25,000 households could be hit in a medium scenario, rising to 100,000 in the worst case. Besides Kibra, the list includes Lang’ata, Mukuru, Gatina, Waruku and Waithaka, along with flood-prone roads such as Uhuru Highway, Jogoo Road and Thika Road.

“Our focus is on mitigation and preparation at this point in time but also preparing our response perspective to be ready,” said county Chief Officer Bramwel Simiyu.

What it means for Kibra

Health Principal Secretary Mary Muthoni warned that flooding in crowded settlements like Kibra raises the risk of waterborne diseases, including typhoid, cholera, dysentery and hepatitis A, because of poor drainage and shared latrines.

Residents are being told to avoid walking or driving through floodwater, to follow evacuation instructions when they are issued, and to watch for announcements naming nearby schools as emergency holding areas. Officials say people should rely on information from the Health Ministry and Nairobi County rather than rumours.

The mapping comes as the county separately steps up drain-clearing work in low-lying estates ahead of the rains.
