Nigerian Army reshuffles top generals and names a new Boko Haram war commander.
The Nigerian Army has announced a major redeployment of senior officers, approved by the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu.
The most significant change is at the top of the war in the north east. Major General IA Ajose, previously at Army Headquarters department of army operations, becomes Theatre Commander of Joint Task Force North East, Operation Hadin Kai – the military's main campaign against Boko Haram and ISWAP.
He replaces Major General AE Abubakar, who becomes dean of the faculty of operational research at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre.
About 15 senior officers are affected in all: nine major generals and six brigadier generals.
Major General RT Utsaha moves to command the Defence Headquarters Garrison, with Major General AM Alechenu going the other way to the Heritage and Future Centre. Major General AM Umar becomes commandant of the Army War College Nigeria, while Major General UM Alkali leaves the college for civil-military affairs.
Major General GS Muhammed leaves the office of the National Security Adviser to head the Nigerian Army Finance Corporation, and Major General JE Osifo becomes chairman of the Military Pension Board.
Brigadier General MS Adamu takes command of the newly created 8 Brigade, and Brigadier General MS Sule takes over 27 Task Force Brigade.
Army spokesperson Appolonia Anele said the changes are meant "to enhance operational effectiveness, strengthen leadership" and match the command structure to current security problems.
