Most Kibra sports stories are about football. Jamin Luvembe Esikumo took a different road, and it led to the Davis Cup.

Learning the game

Luvembe started at Sadili Sports Academy in Nairobi. As a junior he was ranked second in his age group in the Africa Cup, won a national secondary schools doubles title, and played regularly on the African junior circuit.

Davis Cup, Cairo, 2013

In 2013 he was in Kenya’s four-man team for Davis Cup Africa Zone Group III, played on outdoor clay at Smash Tennis Academy in Cairo. His teammates were Mohammed Fazal Khan, Ibrahim Kibet Yego and Kevin Cheruiyot, and Kenya faced Egypt, Zimbabwe, Madagascar and Nigeria. Mozzart Sport describes him as the first player from Kibera to represent Kenya at the Davis Cup. He also played the Kenya Open in 2014.

Now

He lives in Mombasa, where he coaches tennis in several schools and works in audio and video production. “I coach tennis in Mombasa,” he told Mozzart Sport in June.
