Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro says his refusal to support the 2024 impeachment of then-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was the turning point in his relationship with President William Ruto.

Speaking in a Citizen TV interview on Wednesday, 2 September 2026, Nyoro said: “I told him consciously, out of conscience not political considerations, I told him I would not get involved in the impeachment.”

“The last conversation we ever had anything about politics was the sitting on me not participating in the impeachment,” he said.

Nyoro said he was pressured to sign the impeachment motion while he was abroad, and that he stayed away from both the vote and the swearing-in of the new deputy president.

“The closeness that was there started melting away. It was not a sudden event so to say. It was more of a process,” he said, adding: “I have been very loyal to the people I come close to, including the President, but he was not.”

Background

Once one of Ruto’s closest Mt Kenya allies, Nyoro was removed as chairperson of the National Assembly’s Budget and Appropriations Committee in March 2025 and dropped from the committee altogether in July 2025. President Ruto has previously denied orchestrating Gachagua’s impeachment.

The interview comes amid reports of realignment among Mt Kenya MPs ahead of the 2027 election.
