IEBC to train 200,000 officers for 2027 election security.
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) plans to train 200,000 police and special police officers for deployment during the 2027 General Election.
"We are on the course to train 200,000 police officers and special police officers who will be deployed during the general election," IEBC acting CEO Ruth Kulundu told a national election security forum at Ufungamano House, Nairobi, this week. The training will cover election security, electoral laws and offences.
The two-day forum was convened by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Evangelical Alliance of Kenya, the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims and the National Council of Churches of Kenya.
More polling stations, a GBV situation room
Polling stations are projected to rise from 46,229 in 2022 to 55,393 in 2027 – about 9,000 more. Kulundu said the commission is also "establishing a dedicated situation room to report and respond to electoral gender-based violence".
IEBC chairperson Erastus Ethekon said the commission could not deliver the election alone. "Elections cannot be left to IEBC alone. Independent does not mean you are operating in an island somewhere," he said, adding: "We will guard our independence at all cost."
Inspector General Douglas Kanja said: "We don't have any other country. This is our motherland and we need it intact before, during and after elections."
Court of Appeal Justice Daniel Musinga, vice chair of the Judiciary Elections Committee, said courts "will not shy away from acting appropriately if sufficient evidence is presented".
A technical committee led by Kanja and Ethekon will oversee the election security strategy, with implementation starting late this year. The General Election is set for 10 August 2027.
