Ruto tours Kajiado as 2027 campaign takes shape.
President William Ruto began a three-day tour of Kajiado County on Thursday, September 3, extending a political and development push into Maasai-majority areas that began two weeks earlier with a two-day visit to neighbouring Narok County.
Kajiado Governor Joseph ole Lenku received the President on arrival. The three principal Maa counties have a combined 1,091,690 registered voters, a bloc both sides of Kenya's 2027 contest are courting.
Roads and housing on the agenda
During the visit, Ruto highlighted progress on the Sh9.4 billion Illasit-Rombo-Chala-Njukini-Taveta road, a 67km corridor linking Kajiado and Taita Taveta counties that is now 48 percent complete and running nine months ahead of schedule.
"The Ksh9.4 billion road is a major economic corridor that will ease movement of people and goods, cut travel time from two hours to 40 minutes between Kajiado and Taita-Taveta counties, and unlock trade in the region," Ruto said. The government is also spending Sh13 billion on a further 220km of roads and Sh28 billion on affordable housing, markets and student hostels across the region.
Commentators say the timing, close to the 2027 election, gives the tour an unmistakably political dimension, as Ruto works to shore up support in a region where opposition parties have been making inroads.
