Nairobi’s western corridor set for Sh3 billion water and sanitation upgrade.
More than 300,000 residents of western Nairobi are set to benefit from a Sh3 billion water and sanitation upgrade funded by the French Development Agency (AFD). The project covers a broad sweep of neighbourhoods – Kangemi, Kawangware, Dagoretti, Riruta, Uthiru, Kinoo, Karen, Kabiria and Ngando – many of which have struggled for years with erratic supply.
The works include a 19.7-kilometre transmission pipeline, a 5,500-cubic-metre storage tank in Karen and 63 kilometres of new sewer lines, with about 250,000 people targeted for improved sanitation specifically. The Athi Water Works Development Agency, whose chief executive Joseph Kamau is overseeing delivery, has set a 24-month timeline.
For residents used to buying water from vendors or queuing at communal points, reliable piped supply would be transformative – cutting costs, reducing disease risk and freeing up hours spent fetching water. The challenge, as always in Nairobi's water sector, will be finishing on schedule and ensuring the new lines actually reach the low-income households that need them most.
