Nairobi County announces 997 job vacancies in major recruitment drive.
Nairobi County has advertised 997 positions across its departments in a large recruitment drive, according to the source credited below.
Background
County recruitment drives of this size are governed by the County Governments Act and by public service values in the Constitution, which require fair competition, transparency and representation of Kenya's diversity. In practice the parts that determine whether a drive is credible are mundane: whether the advertisement lists the actual qualifications, whether shortlisting criteria are published, whether interviews are scored against a written matrix, and whether the county publishes the names of those appointed. A recruitment that skips those steps is difficult to distinguish from patronage even when it is not.
Why it matters here
For young people in Kibra, county jobs are among the few formal employment openings that do not require a personal connection to a private employer, which is exactly why the fairness of the process matters so much here. The recurring complaint from Kibra applicants is not that they were rejected but that they never learned how the decision was made, and that the cost of applying, documents, certificates of good conduct, transport to an interview, falls on people least able to absorb it.
What to watch next
Whether shortlisting criteria and successful candidates are published, how long the process takes, and whether the county reports the distribution of appointments across sub-counties.
