Kenya’s election and security agencies have flagged a string of warning signs ahead of the 2027 general election, saying they could undermine the vote and, in the worst case, tip the country into crisis.

Officials cited goons disrupting political rallies, rising hate speech, claims of planned rigging, disputes over electoral tenders, disinformation and growing public distrust in electoral institutions as the main threats, 342 days before Kenyans vote.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission Chairperson Erastus Edung Ethekon said the commission is increasingly having to respond to serious allegations from political leaders over how it is managing preparations for 2027.

Echoes of 2007/08

Weak public trust in the IEBC, combined with economic hardship and unemployment, was named as a factor that could raise the risk of election-related violence. Officials warned that failing to confront these threats early could expose Kenya to a repeat of the 2007/08 post-election violence.

The commission is due to run the general election in August 2027. The warning adds pressure on the IEBC and security agencies to act on the concerns raised, and to be seen to act, well before parties begin nominating candidates for county assembly, parliamentary and presidential seats and campaigning intensifies across the country.
