Bishop Margaret Wanjiru has declared that she will run for Nairobi governor in 2027, setting up a fresh challenge to Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The former Starehe MP made the announcement during a Sunday service on September 6, saying she will contest on a Kenya Moja Movement party ticket. She told her congregation the decision was “not a personal ambition” but “a call to serve”.

What she is promising

Wanjiru said her priorities would be cleaner streets and better waste collection, reliable water, working roads and drainage, stronger county health services, jobs for young people and a crackdown on corruption inside City Hall.

This is not her first attempt at the seat. In 2022 she sought the Kenya Kwanza ticket but stepped aside for Sakaja and campaigned for him. She was elected Starehe MP in 2007 on an ODM ticket and later served as an assistant minister for housing.

Her entry adds to a crowded field. Several other politicians have already signalled interest in unseating Sakaja, and the race is expected to heat up as the 2027 campaign season draws closer. For residents of Kibra and other estates, the contest will shape who controls county services such as water, garbage and health for the next five years.
