Football Kenya Federation confirmed on 10 September that the SportPesa League 2026/27 “will commence on Saturday, 19th September 2026, in compliance with the recent court ruling issued on 28th August 2026”. Gor Mahia host Murang’a Seal, AFC Leopards play Bandari, Ulinzi Stars meet Tusker and 3K FC face Mara Sugar in the opening round.

The statement said nothing about the National Super League, the second tier, where both of Kibra’s senior clubs play.

Why the second tier is stuck

The delay comes from Kariobangi Sharks’ court case against the 2025 promotion and relegation rules. Under the 2019 rules, two teams went down automatically and the 16th-placed Premier League side played off against the third-placed NSL side; the 2025 rules relegate three and promote three. The High Court ruling of 28 August let the top flight start, but FKF says Sharks cannot be scheduled for NSL fixtures and Mombasa United, who finished third in the NSL, cannot take a Premier League place while the case continues. The parties return to court on 21 September.

Kenya Footballers Welfare Association president James Situma has warned that the delays are hurting players’ livelihoods.

Kibera Black Stars

Black Stars finished ninth of 21 teams last season with 53 points. In the off-season they lost players to the top flight, according to team manager Kevin Adongo: Bundi to Tusker, Ange to Murang’a Seal and Owenge to Ulinzi Stars, while goalkeeper Elvis joined Nairobi City Stars. Ulinzi Stars against Tusker on Saturday puts two former Black Stars on opposite sides.

“Football ends on the pitch, not in courtroom battles,” Adongo said in August. “Let us stop taking football to court.”

Kibera Soccer

Kibera Soccer FC are waiting for their first ever NSL match after winning promotion from Division One under coach Iddi Shikanda. Their fixture list, like Black Stars’, does not exist yet.
