Midfielder Lindey Weey Atieno is in the 30-player provisional squad coach Mildred Cheche has named for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco, which runs from 17 October to 7 November.

The squad list places her at Raila Educational Centre, the secondary school built with Kibra constituency funds. Earlier reports this year listed her at Madira Girls; the September squad lists put her at the Kibra school.

She scored Kenya’s third-minute opener in the 2-1 win over Namibia in Windhoek in April, the first leg of the qualifying campaign, and was the only player kept from the squad that went to Kenya’s first U-17 World Cup in 2024.

The road to Morocco

Kenya knocked out Namibia in April, Uganda in May and South Africa in July to qualify for a second World Cup in a row.

In camp

The team is in residential camp at Kasarani Annex. Four players had not reported by Tuesday: three from Butere Girls who are waiting to be released by the school, and midfielder Mwanakombo Bakari, who is in the United States on a scholarship. “Most of our players have reported to camp. We are missing four, three of whom are from Butere Girls,” Cheche said. The squad will be trimmed before the tournament.

Kenya are in Group E and play China PR on 19 October, the United States on 22 October and Samoa on 25 October. Cheche says the squad has the quality to go beyond the group stage.
