Vivian Shiyonzo: the striker who became Kibera’s goalkeeper and went to WAFCON.
Vivian Shiyonzo started out as a striker. She moved into goal at Kibera Soccer Women, crediting coach David Vijago and goalkeeper trainer Mark Cloud. By November 2024 she had four clean sheets in five matches, matching her total for the whole of the previous season. "It feels good we are on top," she said then.
2025: the breakthrough
She finished 2024/25 with the second-most clean sheets among Premier League goalkeepers, earning her first Harambee Starlets call-up for the CECAFA Senior Women's Championship in Dar es Salaam in June 2025. Two weeks later she was named best goalkeeper of the FKF Women's Cup final as Kibera beat Vihiga Queens 1-0.
The road to Morocco
Starlets coach Beldine Odemba included her in a February 2026 mini-camp for local players, alongside Kibera's Mary Majeso and Anna Arusi, then in the 57-player provisional squad, the 24-player squad for the Four Nations tournament in Zambia in June, and on 16 July in the final 25 for the Women's Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, as one of three goalkeepers with Annedy Kundu and Lilian Awuor.
From the pre-tournament camp in Miramas, France, she told The Star: "We have really enjoyed our stay in France… everyone is pushing themselves to be in the best condition. If I get the opportunity to play, I will give my best to help the team. Our target is to reach the semifinals."
The tournament
Kenya's second WAFCON, after 2016, was hard. Starlets lost 0-4 to Morocco in Rabat on 26 July, 0-1 to Senegal on 30 July and 0-2 to Algeria on 3 August, finishing bottom of Group A without a point or a goal. Lilian Awuor was the goalkeeper named in the match reports; KNN has not found a record of Shiyonzo playing.
Odemba afterwards: "Although we had good preparations, including participating in the Fifa Series, playing more international friendly matches would have made a difference."
Back at Kibera, coach George Okallo says her exposure "is important for us as a club because we want to continue producing players who can compete at the highest level".
