Explainer: what the SHOFCO Urban Network is, and how its elections work.
Many Kibra residents belong to the SHOFCO Urban Network, known as SUN. Here is what it is.
What it is
SUN is the membership network of Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO), the organisation Kennedy Odede started in Kibera in 2004. It was formally set up in 2015 with 3,000 members. (Profile: Kennedy Odede)
How leaders are chosen
Members elect leaders at ward, sub-county and county level every three years.
What it does
Savings and table-banking groups.
Micro-insurance.
Advocacy on local issues.
Peace-building.
How big it is
SHOFCO's own page, updated in May 2025, says SUN reaches 2 million beneficiaries across 84 sites in 35 counties. In August 2026, The Star reported that SUN leadership elections in Kilifi drew more than 5,000 members. These are SHOFCO's figures and KNN has not checked them independently.
SHOFCO's offices are on Kibera Drive in Gatwekera.
