Nairobi County will register street photographers and issue them with identification badges, Governor Johnson Sakaja said on Wednesday after meeting hundreds of photographers and other creatives.

“The County will introduce a formal registration and identification system for street photographers, including badges, to distinguish recognised creatives operating in the city,” he said.

What it means

Registration is free. The county’s Finance Act does not charge street photographers, a position dating from 2022 when the county allowed them to work without paying; fees of up to Sh50,000 apply only to larger commercial shoots. The badges are meant to tell registered photographers apart from unregistered operators, and to give the county a database of who is working in the central business district.

Photographers at the meeting complained of harassment and demands for unofficial payments. Sakaja also promised free Wi-Fi in selected areas to help creatives market their work, and asked them to document littering, dumping and vandalism.

“Capture our beauty, document our transformation, protect our city and tell Nairobi’s story to the world,” he said. No start date for registration has been given.
