Guide: how to get your home ready for El Niño in Kibra.
Kenya Met expects above-normal rain from October to December. In March, the Water Resources Authority told people in Kibera, Nyayo Highrise, Lang'ata and nearby estates to move to higher ground because the Nairobi Dam could overflow. Families living by the river are usually hit first.
Here is what you can do now, while it is still dry.
Before the rains
Fix the roof and gutters. Until the rains start, Nairobi County says you do not need approval for minor repairs like gutters (KNN report).
Clear the drain outside your door. Plastic and rubbish block drains and push water into houses. Get your neighbours together for a clean-up.
Raise what matters. Put beds, food, electronics and school books on raised platforms or high shelves.
Protect your documents. Keep ID cards, birth certificates, allocation letters and school certificates in a sealed plastic bag you can grab fast.
Save the numbers. Nairobi County emergency line 1508. Kenya Red Cross toll-free 1199. Police 999 or 112. More in KNN's emergency numbers directory.
Know where you would go. The county has named 27 drop-off points and shelters. Ask your chief, village elder or ward administrator which one is nearest, and agree a meeting point with your family.
Keep a torch and charged phones. Power often goes off in storms.
When it is raining hard
Do not walk or drive through floodwater, and keep away from riverbanks. That is the Kenya Red Cross's first rule.
If water is rising near the river or the Nairobi Dam, move to higher ground early. Do not wait.
If water gets into the house, switch off power at the main switch, but only if you can do it safely.
Keep children away from drains and the river.
After the water goes down
Boil or treat drinking water. Floods spread diseases like cholera and typhoid.
Wash hands with soap and clean the house with water and disinfectant.
Report blocked drains and damage to 1508.
