A piece of land in Gatwekera, Kibera, that used to be a dumping site is now a farm.

Mtaa Safi Initiative, a community group that works on waste and sanitation in Kibera, launched its Hidden Gem Urban Farm there on Saturday, 19 September. Volunteers and partner groups planted flowers and organic vegetables.

Mtaa Safi calls it a “climate-smart agriculture space” and says the project shows that “neglected spaces can become productive spaces”. Its slogan for the farm is “waste to worth”.

A team effort

“It was all a joint effort. Everyone got to plant something,” wrote Feat Magazine, which photographed the launch for Mtaa Safi. Kibra Youth Network was among the groups tagged in the photos.

Why it matters

Dumpsites in Kibera fill drains and wash into the river when it rains. Turning one into a garden means one less place for rubbish to pile up, and fresh food grown close to home.

It also comes just before the rains. Kenya Met expects above-normal rain from October (KNN report).
