World Cleanup Day: Kibra Youth Network joins about 20 groups for a clean-up at Tumaini.
Young people from Kibra Youth Network (KYN) joined volunteers from about 20 organisations on Saturday, 19 September, for a World Cleanup Day clean-up at Tumaini, along the Southern Bypass near Tumaini Hope Centre.
The day was organised by The Garbage Initiative, which said 20 organisations took part and 350 "eco-warriors" were invited. After the clean-up, the groups joined sessions on food waste run by GreenShift for Development and KEPRO.
Why food waste?
This year's World Cleanup Day theme is "From Clean Plates to Clean Cities". NEMA, the national environment authority, says more than 1 billion meals are wasted around the world every day. Kenya's national event was held in Kisii the next day (KNN report).
What KYN said
On Instagram, KYN said it was proud to take part and wants more partnerships that help both young people and the environment.
KYN's photos from the day were taken by Brighton Mboya, a student at Pen's Peak under KYN. You can see them on KYN's Instagram page, @kibrayouthnetwork08.
Why it matters now
Rubbish in open drains is one reason Kibra floods. Kenya Met expects above-normal rain from October, and Nairobi County is racing to clear drains before then (KNN report).
