Raila’s first anniversary: candles at Uhuru Park on Friday, and ODM’s month of events. What you need to know.
ODM is asking Kenyans to light a candle for Raila Odinga at 6pm on Friday, 2 October, wherever they are, as the party begins a month of events to mark one year since his death.
Raila died on 15 October 2025 in Kerala, India. The party has named October "Mwezi wa Baba". "One year ago, Kenya lost a giant," said ODM chair and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga.
Friday in Nairobi
The main Nairobi event is at Uhuru Park. Activities start at 3pm, and candles will be lit at 6pm. Lang'ata MP Phelix Odiwuor (Jalang'o), who announced the event, said Governor Johnson Sakaja and Governor Wanga are expected. Events will also be held at Treasury Square in Mombasa, in Kisumu and on Kenyatta Avenue in Nakuru.
The rest of October
9 October: a memorial rally in Kakamega.
10 to 15 October: events led by the family.
15 October: the main memorial at Kang'o ka Jaramogi in Bondo. President Ruto is expected to attend.
17 to 25 October: events in Garissa, the Coast, Kajiado and Turkana.
31 October: a rally in Nairobi. The venue has not been announced.
The plans have not been free of disagreement. Raila's family has set up its own committee, chaired by Prof Adams Oloo, and his sister Ruth Odinga has publicly criticised the party's programme. Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also objected.
The Kibra connection
Raila was MP for Lang'ata from 1993 to 2013. For those 20 years Kibera was part of his constituency, before Kibra became a constituency of its own at the 2013 election.
