Waiyaki Way lanes into the city close for a month from Thursday 8 October. And a consumer lobby wants Moja Expressway to explain ‘expired’ toll points.
The Kenya National Highways Authority will partially close the city-bound lanes of Waiyaki Way between Kempinski and the Museum Hill interchange from Thursday 8 October to Saturday 7 November, 31 days, for highway maintenance.
In a notice dated 1 October, KeNHA asked motorists to use alternative routes where they can, to follow the traffic management plan when approaching the section, and to cooperate with the police officers and marshals who will be deployed. The open sections of the road remain usable during the works.
"This closure is to allow for highway maintenance works on the road section," the notice says.
Expressway toll points
Separately, the Consumers Federation of Kenya has given Moja Expressway seven days to explain why some motorists found their prepaid toll points marked "expired" even though they had balances. COFEK says prepaid toll points are value paid for in advance and cannot lapse, and it wants the operator to spell out its expiry policy, how customers were notified, and whether refunds will be made. Moja Expressway had not responded by the time the complaint was reported on Monday.
What it means for you
Anyone coming into town from Westlands, Kangemi, Kikuyu or Limuru Road through Museum Hill should expect slower trips for a month, especially in the morning peak. Leave earlier.
Matatus and private cars heading from Kibra to Westlands are not on the closed lanes, but the diversions will add traffic around Museum Hill and Chiromo.
If you use the Expressway, check your toll-point balance in the app before you travel, and keep screenshots if points have disappeared.
