Seventeen people died shortly after midnight on Saturday 3 October when a lorry hit several vehicles, including a 14-seater matatu, at Salama on the Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Makueni County.

The victims were parishioners of St Mathias Mulumba Catholic Church in Mikindani, Mombasa, who were travelling to the Subukia National Shrine in Nakuru for the national prayer day. All 17 died at the scene. Seven injured people were taken to Sultan Hamud Sub-County Hospital.

“We are saddened with lots of grief to announce the untimely passing on of seventeen (17) pilgrims from St. Mathias Mulumba, Mikindani, in an accident that occurred at Salama,” said Archbishop Martin Kivuva of the Archdiocese of Mombasa.

The cause

KBC and Kenyans.co.ke reported that the lorry’s brakes failed. Citizen Digital reported that the circumstances had not yet been established. No police statement on the cause had been published by Monday.

The National Transport and Safety Authority says more than 2,100 people died on Kenya’s roads in the first half of 2026, 11 per cent more than in the same period of 2025.

What it means for you

  • Mombasa Road is Nairobi’s main route to the coast, and overnight matatu and bus travel on it is common. Salama, past Sultan Hamud, is a known black spot.
  • Churches, schools and groups in Kibra that hire vehicles for trips can ask to see the vehicle’s inspection sticker and the driver’s licence, and can insist on daytime travel.
  • If you are travelling for the Raila Odinga anniversary events in Bondo on 14 and 15 October, plan to travel in daylight.
