A month without power: Kajiado South residents block the Emali-Loitokitok highway.
Residents of Kalesirwa in Kajiado South blocked the Emali-Loitokitok highway with stones on Monday, in protest at a blackout they say has now lasted about a month.
Matatu and bus services stopped, travel to Emali, Loitokitok and the interior markets was cut off, and long-distance cargo trucks were held up.
What residents say
They say the outage has hit homes, small businesses, health facilities, schools and farming projects, and has cost the area real money.
By the time of the protest neither Kenya Power nor the constituency leadership had said anything publicly about the outage. Kenya Power has separately been building new substations and transmission lines in Kajiado, a county that long ran on a single 33kV line.
