Prices in Kenya rose faster in September. Annual inflation reached 6.8%, up from 6.6% in August, according to figures from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) released on Wednesday, 30 September.

It is the third rise in a row, after 6.4% in June and 6.5% in July, and the highest reading in more than a year. It is still inside the Central Bank of Kenya’s target range of 2.5% to 7.5%.

What got cheaper since August

  • Tomatoes, down 4.1%.
  • Sugar, down 0.4%.
  • Sifted maize flour, down 0.6%.
  • Electricity, down about 2% for homes using 50 or 200 units a month.
  • A 13kg gas cylinder, down 0.2%.

KNBS Director General Macdonald Obudho put the rise down to food, transport and housing costs.

What it means for you

  • A basket of shopping costs more than a year ago, mainly because of vegetables, milk, bread flour and fares.
  • The next thing to watch is EPRA’s monthly fuel price review on 14 October. Fuel prices feed into matatu fares and food prices.
