A Nairobi court has ordered a woman and her son held for 21 days while detectives investigate the murder of clinical psychologist Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso.
Rose Mbithe Mulwa will be held at Kileleshwa Police Station and Chris Mulwa at Kilimani Police Station. The magistrate found the prosecution had shown a real risk of witness interference, saying the alleged threats and the murder gave a factual basis that could not be ignored, Capital FM reports.
Dr Mutiso was shot dead on 31 July while travelling by taxi along Ralph Bunche Road in Upper Hill on her way to work. A post-mortem by Chief Government Pathologist Dr Johansen Oduor found three gunshot wounds – two to the head and one to the upper body – with severe head and chest injuries causing her death.
Court documents say that 24 days before the killing she reported to Kilimani Police Station that two men on a motorcycle had trailed and threatened her on two occasions. Investigators allege she identified the pillion passenger in one of those incidents as Chris Mulwa.
Detectives are examining the relationship between the suspects and the victim. According to investigators, Rose Mulwa is the former wife of Dr Mutiso’s husband, Prof David Musyimi Ndetei, and Chris Mulwa is their son.
Police are also looking at whether the killing is connected to the September 2025 murder of lawyer Mathew Kyalo Mbobu, who acted for Prof Ndetei in a long-running matrimonial property dispute involving Rose Mulwa. Investigators believe both victims were followed before they were killed.
