Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia says a night in a police cell has only hardened his resolve, after detectives arrested him over remarks he allegedly made at a political rally in Nyeri County.
“A night in the police cell has only strengthened our resolve and commitment to justice. Today, we soldier on!” he wrote on social media on Tuesday morning, adding that he was due at the Milimani Law Courts at 8.30am, Capital FM reports.
Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations arrested him on Monday at the Royal Media Services headquarters, where he had stayed on after a television interview. He was taken to DCI headquarters and then to Kamukunji Police Station for the night.
His lawyers said they had not been formally told what offences he is accused of, and raised concerns about the confiscation of his phone and restrictions on access to him. By Tuesday morning no charges had been made public.
Kaguchia said he had remained at the broadcaster’s premises after learning detectives were waiting for him over comments he made at a rally in Kieni, Nyeri County, on Saturday. Speaking to Citizen TV beforehand, he said his remarks had been taken out of context, denied wrongdoing, and accused President William Ruto’s digital strategist Dennis Itumbi and some Mt Kenya politicians of amplifying the allegations. He said he had received no summons and learned of the planned arrest through social media.
