Why Kenya keeps attracting data centres
Kenya has become one of the busiest markets in Africa for data centre construction. The pull is a mix of undersea cable landings on the coast, a large base of mobile money and digital services, relatively high renewable generation on the grid, and the fact that regional companies increasingly want their data stored in the region rather than in Europe.
The pressures are just as consistent: the price and reliability of power, the cost of imported equipment, and the long wait between an announcement and a facility that is actually taking customers.
The rules that decide where data sits
Kenya's data protection law and the office of the data commissioner set conditions on how personal data is handled and moved, and government has pushed for sensitive data to be hosted locally. That regulatory push, more than any marketing, is what turns a hosting decision into a construction project.
For local businesses the practical question is price. Local hosting only helps a Nairobi software firm or a county health system if it is cheaper and faster than the alternative.
The Kibra angle
A data centre is not a big employer once it is running. The jobs are in the build, in security, in facilities work, and then in a small number of technical roles that require certification rather than a degree. The other effect is indirect. Cheaper, closer hosting lowers the cost of running the digital services that Kibra businesses already depend on, from delivery apps to school management systems.
