Members of the National Assembly have condemned what they termed a deliberate attempt to inflame ethnic tensions after a purported list circulated on social media alleging ethnic favouritism in the deployment of police officers commanding stations and divisions.
How a fake list does its damage
A document that looks official, listing names and communities, is one of the cheapest and most effective tools in Kenyan political mischief. It spreads on WhatsApp faster than any correction, it confirms what people already suspect, and by the time it is denied it has already been screenshotted a thousand times.
The damage is not only to the officers named. It is to the assumption that a public appointment can be explained by merit and law rather than by ethnic arithmetic.
How to check an appointment
Senior public appointments and police deployments are documented. Appointments of that kind appear in the Kenya Gazette or in official statements from the service concerned, and the service itself will confirm a posting. A list circulating as an image, with no reference number, no signature and no gazette citation, is not evidence of anything.
Before forwarding, look for three things: the source, a verifiable reference, and whether any named institution has confirmed it. Forwarding it is what makes it work.
Why it matters in Kibra
This ward has lived through what happens when ethnicity is used to organise politics, and it carries the memory of the violence that followed a disputed election. As the next cycle approaches, the same material is already circulating, and the constitution’s requirement that public service reflect the face of the nation is being used as a weapon rather than a standard.
Kenyan law also makes incitement and ethnic contempt criminal offences, and cases have been brought over exactly this kind of content.

Whether the police service publishes the actual deployment record, whether anyone is investigated over the fake list, and what the cohesion commission does before the campaign season.
