Iran seeks way out of ‘neither war nor peace’ stalemate with US.
Iran President Pezeshkian said he hopes talks with Oman can end the "neither war nor peace" state of relations with US.
Background
Oman has for years acted as the quiet channel between Tehran and Washington, hosting or relaying messages when direct contact was politically impossible for either side. The phrase used here, a state of neither war nor peace, describes a long stalemate in which sanctions stay in force, military incidents recur, and neither a settlement nor an open conflict arrives. The Strait of Hormuz sits at the centre of it, because roughly a fifth of the world's seaborne oil passes through a channel narrow enough for one incident to move global prices.
Why it matters here
Kenya imports almost all of its refined fuel, and much of it moves through the Gulf. When shipping and insurance rates rise there, the cost arrives in Kenya weeks later through the monthly fuel price review, and from there it moves into matatu fares, the delivered price of a sack of maize flour, and the cost of running a kiosk fridge in Kibra. Households here feel Hormuz at the pump and on the plate long before they read about it.
What to watch next
Whether either government confirms that talks are actually scheduled, how shipping and insurance rates in the Gulf respond, and what the next Kenyan fuel price review shows.
