Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for the 1996 murder of rapper Tupac Shakur, three decades after the shooting that shocked the music world.

Clark County District Court Judge Carli Kierny handed down the sentence in Las Vegas on Tuesday, 13 October. A jury found Davis guilty on 31 August after deliberating for less than three hours.

Shakur was shot in a drive-by attack near the Las Vegas Strip in September 1996 and died in hospital six days later. For years no one was charged. Davis, a former gang leader who had spoken publicly about being in the car from which the shots were fired, was arrested in September 2023.

Prosecutors asked for the maximum sentence, citing the pain caused to Shakur’s family, the fact that Davis had profited from telling the story, and his earlier convictions. His lawyers had asked for a sentence of 40 to 100 years, pointing to the long delay in bringing the case.

Shakur’s siblings, Sekyiwa and Mopreme Shakur, gave emotional statements asking the judge not to show leniency. The judge told Davis he could not simply walk away after taking a life.

Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said justice had finally been served for Shakur and his loved ones. Davis is expected to appeal.

Tupac remains one of the best-selling rappers of all time and a lasting influence on hip-hop in Kenya, where his lyrics are still quoted by a new generation of artists.
