Gor Mahia start their title defence with a 4-2 win over Murang’a Seal at Nyayo. Shariff Musa scores twice, but two late goals from Josphat Lopaga give the champions a scare.
Gor Mahia began the defence of their Kenyan Premier League title with a 4-2 win over Murang'a Seal under the floodlights at Nyayo National Stadium on Tuesday night.
K'Ogalo took the lead after just five minutes when Alpha Onyango curled in a free-kick after Patrick Esombe was fouled on the edge of the box. Murang'a Seal almost hit back in the 29th minute when Majaliwa Charo's shot beat goalkeeper Kevin Omondi but struck the base of the post.
Gor went in 1-0 up at the break and took control after half-time. Shariff Musa scored twice, in the 52nd and 62nd minutes, before Dwang made it 4-0 in the 71st minute with a strike from about 25 yards.
Late fightback
Murang'a Seal refused to go quietly. Substitute Josphat Lopaga pulled one back in the 78th minute after a mix-up in the Gor defence, then volleyed in a second in the 84th after a corner was not cleared.
The result extends Gor Mahia's unbeaten run against Murang'a Seal in the top flight to seven matches.
The champions will look to build on the win in the second round of fixtures this weekend, while Murang'a Seal will want to tighten up a defence that leaked four goals.
Fans in Kibera, a stronghold of Gor Mahia support, will be hoping the record champions can avoid the slow starts that have cost them in recent seasons.
