The M-Pesa Foundation is putting Sh50 million into the Nyaribo upgrade, with Sh2 million from the Ministry of Education.

The project is being spearheaded by the M-Pesa Foundation, which has committed Sh50 million, while the Ministry of Education is providing an additional Sh2 million towards the construction of a Junior Secondary School science laboratory.

Background

The M-Pesa Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunications operator. It funds projects in education, health, environmental conservation and disaster response, and is separate from the Safaricom Foundation.

Junior school covers grades seven to nine under Kenya’s competency-based curriculum. The first cohort moved into junior secondary classes in January 2023, and schools have since been under pressure to build laboratories and workshops for the more practical, science-heavy syllabus.
