Five people died on Friday, September 4, when a lorry overturned along the Ikutha-Mutulu-Kasaala road in Kitui County. The vehicle was carrying traders and goods to Kasaala market when the driver lost control near Mutulu shopping centre.

Ikutha Sub-County Police Commander Raphael Mutiso confirmed the deaths and said several other passengers were injured. Accounts of how many people were hurt varied between reports.

“I urge drivers and other road users to be careful while on the roads to protect the lives of passengers and pedestrians,” Mutiso said.

The bodies were taken to a Mutomo hospital mortuary, while the injured were treated at Ikutha Level Four Hospital and Mutomo Mission Hospital. Police had not established what caused the driver to lose control by the time of publication.

A wider road safety problem

The crash adds to a grim tally on Kenyan roads this year. The National Transport and Safety Authority recorded 2,150 road deaths in the first half of 2026, an 11 percent rise on the same period last year. Lorries overloaded with passengers and goods on rural routes remain a common cause of fatal crashes, as in Kitui.
