FKF committee to decide new season’s start date.
The Football Kenya Federation's National Executive Committee will decide when the 2026/27 SportPesa Premier League season starts, after club consultations failed to reach agreement. September 15 has been identified as the earliest realistic date, but disputes over promotion and relegation rules have held up a final decision.
The disagreement centres on which rules should apply, the 2019 or 2025 versions, with conflicting court directives from Milimani and Murang'a High Courts complicating the picture further. Two clubs, Kariobangi Sharks and Mombasa United, are involved in ongoing court disputes tied to the dispute.
Clubs also discussed league composition, relegation play-offs and a proposal for a semi-autonomous league management structure at the meeting. Under new provisions being considered, clubs would be allowed to register up to seven foreign players, up from current limits, with the season set to run 34 rounds and open with nine matches.
Clubs await word
Mathare United chief executive Jectone Obure said clubs are in limbo. "We are now waiting to see what the NEC will resolve before we can have a clear way forward," he said. FKF chief executive Dennis Gicheru and leagues and competitions head Frank Ogolla were both involved in the club talks.
