The Ministry of Education has again extended the deadline for university and TVET students to apply for government funding, this time to September 21.

The new deadline, pushed back from August 31, gives first-time university students and TVET trainees three more weeks to apply through the Higher Education Loans Board and the Universities Fund. The ministry said the extension recognises that “some eligible students and trainees may not have met the initial deadline on account of various causes.”

Confusion over new funding model

By the original deadline, 789,422 applications had already been submitted. The extension follows reported confusion in public universities over the new student-centred funding model, which left some first-year students without disbursements at the start of the academic year. The government has so far released Sh22.12 billion in first-semester funding to continuing university and TVET students.

The ministry said transitional arrangements will follow once Parliament passes the Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill, 2026, meant to create a more universal funding framework. For now, students who missed the August deadline, including many from low-income households in places like Kibera, have a fresh chance to secure loans and grants before the new term.
