City Thunder’s unbeaten run tested in KNBL playoffs.
Kenya's basketball playoffs got under way this weekend with Kisumu Lakeside facing a City Thunder side that has not lost a match in three seasons. The best-of-three quarter-final series opened on Friday, with Game Two on Saturday and a decider on Sunday if needed.
City Thunder finished the regular season unbeaten at 22-0, collecting 44 points to top the standings. Lakeside qualified in eighth place with a 9-13 record and 31 points. Lakeside head coach Abel Nson acknowledged the gap in form but said his side would not be overawed. "Thunder is the best team in the country and has gone unbeaten for three seasons," he said, "we will come out there and compete, put our best foot forward and try to win."
Other quarter-finals
Elsewhere in the playoffs, Kenya Ports Authority face Strathmore Blades, Equity Dumas take on Umoja, and Stanbic Shields meet Ulinzi Warriors. Nson said the underdog run means as much for his club's standing as the result itself, noting "everybody knows and understands what Kisumu Lakeside is about going into next season."
