Gachagua says he is ready to deputise Sifuna in 2027.
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says he has no problem serving as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna's running mate in 2027, or the other way round.
Speaking to Kenyans living in Spokane, Washington, on Saturday, September 5, during his US tour, Gachagua said he had told Sifuna to ignore critics and go for the presidency. "Even I, Riggy G, I can deputise Sifuna. Sifuna can deputise me," he said.
Why it matters
The remarks are the clearest sign yet that opposition leaders are discussing a joint ticket to face President William Ruto. Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for Citizens Party, has been touring Kenyan diaspora communities as he builds his own 2027 campaign.
He was responding to COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli, who said Sifuna is too young to be president. Gachagua said young leaders "are the leaders of today", not tomorrow, and argued that a ticket mixing youth and experience could work. He also dismissed doubts about whether Mt Kenya voters would back a candidate from outside the region.
Sifuna, who is ODM secretary general, has not formally declared a presidential bid. As Nairobi senator, he represents a county that includes Kibra.
