Doctors have given the government seven days to end the nurses’ strike, warning that they will down tools if nothing changes.

The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) issued the ultimatum through its secretary-general, Dr Davji Atellah, at a press briefing in Nairobi. The nurses’ walkout is now in its 43rd day and has disrupted services in public hospitals across the country.

What it means for patients

For families who rely on public hospitals, the strike has already meant longer queues, postponed clinics and referrals to private facilities many cannot afford. If doctors join, the few services still running in public wards would largely stop.

KMPDU says the dispute can still be settled if the government sits down with the nurses’ union and closes the outstanding issues within the week.
