Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has dissolved the 250-seat parliament by decree and called an early parliamentary election for 25 October.

The vote had been due next year. Vucic said putting it off was the greater risk. “We need election results that will clearly show the will of the people,” he said.

He intends to run for prime minister once his second and final term as president ends. That would extend a 12-year run in power as either president or prime minister. His Serbian Progressive Party formally nominated him for the job on Saturday.

The election follows nearly two years of anti-corruption street protests. They began after the canopy of a railway station in Novi Sad collapsed on 1 November 2024, killing 16 people.

About 6.5 million voters are registered. A student-backed list that grew out of the protest movement is expected to give the ruling party a real contest.

Analysts have drawn comparisons with Hungary’s recent election, where a long-serving leader lost power despite controlling most of the mainstream media.

The campaign also opens during a diplomatic row with Bosnia, which expelled two Serbian diplomats after Serbia held a public funeral for the convicted war criminal Ratko Mladic.
