Omtatah suspended from the Senate for three sittings over ‘yapping’ remark.
Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah has been suspended from the Senate for three sitting days after he refused to withdraw a remark that President William Ruto was "yapping".
During Wednesday afternoon's sitting, Omtatah said the President's roadside pronouncements had violated the Constitution. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei rose on a point of order, saying the word was unparliamentary.
Speaker Amason Kingi agreed and ordered Omtatah to withdraw it. Omtatah refused, arguing that parliamentary practice, including at Westminster, allows the word and that it was an accurate description. Kingi then ordered him out of the chamber.
Senators divided
Senators Bonny Khalwale and Moses Kajwang defended Omtatah's right to speak freely. Kingi said the Senate's Standing Orders must be followed.
