County to hold land-use plan forums in all five Kibra wards from 23 September.
Nairobi County is starting public forums on a new ten-year land-use and zoning plan that covers all five wards of Kibra, according to a civic-education brief from the county's Built Environment and Urban Planning department, reported by The Kenya Times.
The plan is called the Woodley/Kilimani Zone Local Physical and Land Use Development Plan. It covers 36.13 square kilometres and ten wards: Kilimani, Kileleshwa, Karen, Mugumo-ini, Nyayo Highrise, Woodley/Kenyatta Golf Course, Laini Saba, Lindi, Makina and Sarang'ombe. The last five make up Kibra sub-county.
The dates
Woodley/Kenyatta Golf Course: Wednesday 23 September. Sarang'ombe: Thursday 24 September. Lindi: Friday 25 September. Laini Saba and Makina: Monday 28 September. Mugumo-ini and Nyayo Highrise: Tuesday 29 September. Kilimani and Kileleshwa: Wednesday 30 September.
The brief does not give venues or times. Ask at your ward administrator's office. KNN will publish them when the county releases them.
What will be discussed
Land use and zoning, development pressure, residential density, housing affordability, transport, infrastructure, public facilities, environmental protection and disaster risk. The brief says it is meant to give "an overview of the key thematic areas and issues that will be covered during the First Stakeholder Engagement Forum".
Why it matters here
Zoning decides what can be built where, and how high. For Kibra that covers the Soweto East housing project, the Kenya Railways land at Laini Saba, the Woodley estate where county evictions are being fought (KNN report), and the villages in between. Whatever is agreed will guide building approvals for the next ten years.
The county gave notice of the plan on 16 April and took written views for 21 days. The planning area runs along the Southern Bypass, the Lang'ata – Ngong Road link, the southern edge of Nairobi Dam, the Ngong River, Raila Odinga Way, Valley Road, Ralph Bunche Road, State House Road and Arboretum Drive.
