1,189 people sentenced for political violence since 2022, Murkomen tells the Senate.
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen told the Senate on Wednesday that 1,189 people have been sentenced for political violence and "goonism" since 2022. "This is part of the evidence for those who say that the police are doing nothing to arrest goons," he said.
He was answering a question from Nyandarua Senator John Methu during the Senate plenary.

Murkomen said 121,870 young people have been arrested in connection with criminal gangs over the past four years: 23,676 in 2022, 31,331 in 2023, 34,776 in 2024, 23,961 in 2025 and 8,126 so far this year. Nyeri leads with 9,194 arrests, followed by Nairobi with 8,344 and Kakamega with 7,438. The fewest were in Wajir (46), Lamu (66) and Mandera (73).
Of the 1,189 sentenced over political violence, 302 were young women, according to the Eastleigh Voice. The average custodial sentence for young offenders was about four and a half years, Murkomen said.
He said the government remains committed to dealing with political violence ahead of the 2027 election, and pointed to directives he issued in August telling security agencies to act before suspected gangs reach political gatherings rather than after.
