Kibra Youth Network’s year so far: Ball for Books, a look back to plan ahead, and World Cleanup Day.
Kibra Youth Network (KYN) is a non-profit youth group in Kibera that works on creativity, mental health and community welfare. Here is a round-up of what it has shared on its Instagram page, @kibrayouthnetwork08, this year.
March: giving back, and KYN Day
On 30 March, KYN was tagged in a post by AB1 Gallery about a day of handing out food and clothes in Kibera. "No one is forgotten," the post said.
The next day, photographer Binyanya Pictures shared photos from "Kibra Youth Network Day".
April: a look back to plan ahead
In early April, KYN's stakeholders met to review the group's recent work and plan what comes next. "Impact is never an accident," KYN wrote, saying the review is how it holds itself to account to the community.
April: Ball for Books
KYN and CBCK called on well-wishers to support a back-to-school charity basketball match on 30 April at the CBCK Centre in Lang'ata. The aim was to collect sanitary towels and writing materials, such as books and pens, so children could go back to school with what they need.
September: World Cleanup Day
On 19 September, KYN joined about 20 organisations for a clean-up at Tumaini. Read KNN's report. The same weekend, Mtaa Safi Initiative opened an urban farm on an old dumpsite in Gatwekera (KNN report).
Help build a hall and library
KYN is raising money to build a hall and library for Kibera's young people. You can give by M-Pesa, Paybill 891300, account 149423, or online at mchanga.africa/fundraiser/149423.
