A 10,000-seat arena is planned next to Nairobi’s railway station. NEMA wants your views by late October.
A company wants to build a 10,000-seat indoor arena, a hotel and serviced apartments next to Nairobi's railway station, and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is asking the public what it thinks.
The plan
Site: plot L.R. No. 209/12180 in the railway station area, part of the Nairobi Railway City development.
Developer: Metroarena Development Company, backed by the Zaria Group, co-founded by basketball executive Masai Ujiri, and the US firm Helios Sports & Entertainment Group.
What is in it: a 10,000-seat multi-purpose arena, a 140-room hotel, a 77-unit serviced apartment tower, a three-level public podium, a sports park and parking.
Cost: $294.5 million, about Sh38.2 billion.
Jobs
The developer projects about 3,500 jobs during construction, 1,500 permanent jobs once the arena opens, and up to 25,000 temporary jobs a year around events. These are the company's own estimates.
The risks listed
The environmental study flags traffic disruption, dust, noise and vibration, construction waste, and possible pollution of surface water.
How to have your say
NEMA's notice was published on Friday, 25 September, and invites oral or written comments within 30 days, which takes the window to around 25 October. The report KNN reviewed does not give the address for comments; check the notice on NEMA's website for the details.
Why it matters for Kibra
The site is a few kilometres from Kibra, and 3,500 construction jobs is a lot of jobs. It is also part of Railway City, on Kenya Railways land. KNN's history piece on the railway through Kibera tells the story of what Kenya Railways has promised the area before.
