SHA: from 1 October, only hospitals and clinics with a new contract can treat you on SHA. Check before you go.
The Social Health Authority (SHA) says all current contracts with hospitals and clinics expire at 11:59pm on Wednesday, 30 September. From Thursday, 1 October, a facility that has not signed a new contract cannot treat SHA members.
In a notice on Monday, 28 September, SHA said the provider portal will be switched off for facilities without a new contract. It asked those facilities to move patients who are mid-treatment to contracted ones.
The new contracts
They run from 1 October 2026 to 30 June 2029.
They cover the four funds: primary health care, the Social Health Insurance Fund, the emergency, chronic and critical illness fund, and the public officers' medical scheme.
Facilities apply through SHA's online e-contracting platform, which went live in mid-September. KNN explained how it works last week.
Old NHIF claims
SHA has also changed the dates for checking old NHIF claims at Level 4 facilities that are owed more than Sh10 million. Those facilities have been told to look up their new dates on SHA's website and have their documents ready. The checks involve going through paperwork and visiting the facility.
What it means for you
Before a planned visit from 1 October, ask your hospital or clinic whether it has signed the new SHA contract.
If you are in the middle of treatment at a facility that has not signed, ask to be referred to one that has.
Find facilities near you in KNN's directory of clinics and hospitals serving Kibra.
The notices KNN reviewed do not say how many facilities have signed so far.
If you are turned away, or asked to pay for something SHA covers, tell KNN on WhatsApp +254 721 319 377.
