University non-teaching staff to strike from 2 October over a stalled pay deal.
The Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU) has given a seven-day strike notice. Its members plan to down tools at 12:01am on Friday, 2 October.
KUSU represents non-teaching staff at public universities and their constituent colleges: library, ICT, technical and administrative workers.
Why
The 2025 to 2029 collective bargaining agreement has not been concluded, registered or implemented. Talks should have ended by 30 June 2025.
The union says the Ministry of Education and the National Treasury have not committed money to pay for it.
University employers say they are waiting for government guidelines.
"We have now said enough is enough. We cannot continue with this situation. Either you conclude the CBA, have it registered and implement it, or we will take the action that we know best," KUSU secretary general Dr Charles Mukhwaya said on Friday, 25 September.
What it means for students
If the strike goes ahead, expect libraries, ICT support, registration and finance offices to be affected at every public university. The Star's report does not say whether the lecturers' union, UASU, will join. KNN will update this story if the two sides reach a deal before Friday.
