The Kenya Red Cross says more than two million people could be affected by El Niño rains expected to start in October, and Kibera is among the areas on its watch list.

Peter Murgor, the society’s disaster risk reduction manager, said 46 of the country’s 47 counties are on alert following warnings from the Kenya Meteorological Department. Heavy rainfall is expected between October and December.

Where the danger is highest

The areas flagged include Garissa, Tana River, the Coast, Western Kenya, Baringo and West Pokot, as well as Nairobi’s informal settlements, with Mukuru and Kibera named. People living close to rivers have been advised to move to safer ground before the rains begin.

Nairobi County has received Ksh 2.4 billion from the national government for flood response and says it is clearing blocked drains and working on 16 identified flood hotspots. The Red Cross said it has 15 trained rescue experts and dozens of boats ready for evacuations if needed.

For Kibera, the warning is familiar. Homes along the Ngong River and its tributaries have flooded in past rainy seasons, and residents in low-lying villages should start planning now: keep documents in waterproof bags, know the nearest safe point, and watch for alerts from the county and Red Cross.
